Accounting connector: invoices, payments, and cash position on request

An MCP connector for Xero that lets finance teams ask an AI assistant who owes what, which invoices are overdue, and what cash looks like, and draft invoices and reminders for approval.

Type
AI agent integration (MCP)
Tools
5 agent tools
Stack
TypeScript, MCP SDK, Xero API

The problem

Finance teams answer the same questions every week: what's overdue, has this customer paid, what's our cash position? The answers are in the accounting system, behind reports nobody wants to run.

The solution

A connector over the Xero API turns those questions into tools. Reporting is read-only; anything that sends money or messages to customers is drafted and approved by a person.

Tools the agent can use

overdue_invoicesOverdue receivables by customer and ageRead
payment_statusWhether and when an invoice was paidRead
cash_summaryBank balances and expected inflows and outflowsRead
draft_invoiceDraft an invoice for review in XeroNeeds approval
draft_reminderDraft a payment reminder for a person to sendNeeds approval

How it connects

  1. Claude / Copilot
  2. MCP Gateway
  3. Accounting connector
  4. Xero API
  5. Approval in Xero

Security by design

  • Read-only by default; no payments can be initiated by the agent
  • OAuth tokens scoped to the minimum Xero permissions
  • Customer-facing messages always need human approval
